Nagano Prefecture
Commonly known as the ‘Roof of Japan’, the Nagano Prefecture, on the island of Honshu, is abundant with beautiful mountain scenery, rich cultural history and internationally-renowned cuisine. Nagano earned its nickname from its surrounding mountains, which also make it a world-class sports destination. Water junkies will be in heaven at Lake Kizaki, a beach resort with water games and attractions, while Nagano Onsen is a quiet place to experience hot springs in a secluded environment. Other popular sights include: Suwa Taisha, one of Japan’s oldest shrines; Jigokudani Wild Monkey Park; Matsumoto Castle; and the Zenko-ji temple that houses a Buddha statue which is only shown publicly every six years.
