Info: Elephant Bedroom & Samburu National Park

Samburu National Reserve is set in a valley dependent on the Uaso Nyiro River that flows through it, with the Koitogor and Ololokwe mountains providing an ever-present backdrop. It is most famous for its elephant population, but is also home to The Big Five and the vast majority of Africa’s other big game, such as the cheetah and hyena.

Set amidst Samburu’s spectacular scenery of dry plains and doum palm trees, with the Ewaso Nyiro River flowing past, the camp enjoys an exceptionally beautiful setting in the heart of the African bush. Styled in a distinctly Kenyan manner, with bright African colours and hand-crafted furniture, the tents and lounge are both tastefully designed and extremely comfortable, with each tent even having its own private plunge pool. All meals are enjoyed al-fresco, with impala, monkeys and elephants being regular guests to the camp throughout the day.

Info: Mara Ngenhce Camp, Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

The Maasai Mara National Reserve covers some 1,510 km² and is part of the greater Mara-Serengeti ecosystem, providing an immense protected area for Africa’s threatened wildlife. It is most famous for The Great Migration that occurs every year, when unimaginably large herds of over one million wildebeest and thousands of zebra and Thomson’s gazelle head into the Mara after the rainy season from The Serengeti in Tanzania to feed off the lush grass regenerated by the rain. The Mara is also one of the few places where you are likely to see The Big Five, and lions especially are numerous and commonly seen on game-drives.

Laid out in a similar manner to the Elephant Bedroom, Mara Ngenhce offers luxurious tents with king-size beds, an outdoor shower and bath, as well as each one enjoying a breath-taking view of the Maasai Mara plains. Located on the confluence of two rivers and overlooking a hippo pool, which always has a few hippos and crocodiles to view, the camp is ideally located to maximise wildlife viewing, as all types of animal gather to drink by the river. Expert Maasai guides will lead the safari drives.
